Holly Ann Dangerfield, 22, was pronounced dead at Three Rivers Community Hospital, where doctors were unsuccessful in an attempt at saving her unborn child’s life, Oregon State Police said in a news release. Dangerfield was 7½ months pregnant at the time, police said. Five vehicles were involved in the 1:26 p.m. crash. Police said a preliminary investigation indicates a 1996 Peterbilt truck driven by Dale Arthur Speulda, 24, of Cave Junction was southbound on the highway when he crossed the center line in an attempt to avoid striking a stopped 1998 Dodge Caravan that was waiting to turn left on to Arbor Ridge Road. Speulda struck the back end of the Caravan, driven by Elizabeth Holt, 71, of Grants Pass, police said. The Peterbilt continued into oncoming lanes and collided with a 2000 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Catherine Marshall, 53, of Cave Junction. The Suburban then slammed into a 1998 Ford pickup driven by Janet Sondrol, 58, of Grants Pass, police said. After colliding with the Suburban, Speulda’s truck crashed nearly head-on into a 1988 Nissan Sentra driven by Jaqueline Lea Landers, 46, of Cave Junction. Dangerfield was a passenger in that car, police said. Landers was taken to Three Rivers with serious injuries, police said. Neither Speulda nor his passenger, Lacinda Johnson, 25, of Cave Junction, were injured in the crash. Holt was also uninjured, police said. Marshall was treated for minor injuries at Three Rivers and later released. No criminal charges were announced; OSP is investigating.
