Novices that we still are, Dick’s enthusiasm won us over. We soon joined in celebrating spotting a Ferruginous Hawk soaring, its underside glowing with light. Getting a hands-on birds’ eye view of our winged friends inspired us to join Klamath Bird Observatory. KBO is a local science-based birding research organization. We went on one of their field trips to Malheur. That was our introduction to more of this amazing place we call home, Oregon. From their website, “Malheur National Wildlife Refuge was established on August 18, 1908, by President Theodore Roosevelt as the Lake Malheur Reservation. Roosevelt set aside unclaimed government lands encompassed by Malheur, Mud and Harney Lakes as a preserve and breeding ground for native birds. With over 320 species of birds, Malheur is a mecca for birdwatchers.” On our field trip we sighted over 100 species each day! Bird habitat needs to be preserved for many reasons. One is the “canary in the coal mine” saying. What happens to birds will also affect us humans. If we destroy their habitat, they cannot survive. Sound familiar? Preserve Malheur for the public good. Charlotte Nuessle Ashland Weary of polarization As an octogenarian I am weary of polarized politics pulling our societal fabric apart. Renewal of a unified national purpose is necessary as we face ongoing national and international challenges. All of us need the cornerstones of our better nature to move forward: humanity, civility, compassion and love. Surely we can agree to collaborate, cooperate and create using these concepts. Robert Kaufman Medford Get out and vote As we mark another Martin Luther King Jr. day on the calendars, I am deeply saddened by the reality that less than 50 percent of the eligible voters in the United States choose to vote. By not voting, you not only dishonor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but you in fact vote for corporate greed, institutionalized racism and continuing the growing economic divide between wealthy and poor. Martin Luther King Jr. and many others were brutalized fighting for the African American right to vote, because they understood that only by voting do we as citizens have the power to change, shape and better our circumstances. They also understood the great need for government so that we the people have the power to make our voices heard. We are so lucky that in this upcoming primary we have the opportunity to vote for the first candidate in decades, Sen. Bernie Sanders, who stands for working-class families. I believe that Dr. King and Bernie would have been great friends and allies, as they both stand for true American democracy, that is, a decent life for all. And I believe Dr. King is shouting from above, “Get out and vote!” Lara Scanlon Ashland Calm down Some British persons are intent on banning Donald Trump from entering their hallowed isles. This silliness follows the template currently pursued by many American liberals who can’t seem to halt their furious tantrums — not unlike a troop of maddened Rumplestiltskins unacquainted with the First Amendment and the rights of voters. Calm down! It is our process.
