Jackson County Fair receives awards Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jan. 25, 2016 at 11:33 AM Posted Jan. 25, 2016 at 11:33 AM » Social News Jackson County Fair received several awards Friday from the Oregon Fairs Association, which provides leadership to Oregon’s county fairs. The association considered nominees from all 36 counties for the awards. Jim Teece received the Fair Board Member of the Year Award. Known for his technology expertise, he has created ticketing systems, websites, and apps for the Jackson County Fair. Last year, Teece started the Rogue Valley Grown Pavilion project, which featured locally grown food and brought thousands of new visitors to the fair. Teece is the newly elected board chairman. Jackson County Fair Board members include J.B. Dimick, Kelly Geiger, Kenneth Trautman, Carolyn Ryder and Chris Smith, with newly elected member Gary Miller. Leigh Johnson received the Outstanding Local Fair Supporter Award. He is the president of the Friends of the Fair Foundation, a five-member team committed to providing resources to grow the fairground. Johnson and his wife pledged the first donation to the foundation in 1997, which started a round of donations that totaled about $20,000. Steve and Melanie Olsrud received the Outstanding Business Fair Supporter Award on behalf of Sherm and Wanda Olsrud, owners of Food 4 Less and Sherm's Thunderbird Market. The family business has supported the Jackson County Fair for 50 years and committed millions of dollars to support kids' programs at the fairgrounds. Sherm’s Markets buy 4-H/FFA animals at auction every year and provide a place for fairgoers to park and ride the shuttle bus to the annual county fair in July. The Oregon Fairs Association honored Jackson County Fair for its excellence in media and marketing, receiving the Outstanding Fair Social Media Award for 2015.
