SINCE YOU ASKED Since You Asked: Drivers must 'sharrow' the road with cyclists Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jun. 13, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Jun. 13, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Driving down South Central Avenue between Main Street and 10th Avenue, I noted that for at least two blocks, the entire right lane of this heavily traveled two-lane arterial has been marked with enormous bicycle-use signage. Has the entire right lane been deemed a bicycle lane? Why? — Sally S., Medford We’ve got an entirely new word for you, Sally. And that word is “sharrow.” The city is in the process of painting arrows on various streets in the city to designate where cyclists can share the road, or to explain it in a more mathematical fashion: Share + arrows = sharrows. Cory Crebbin, director of Medford Public Works, said there are a number of streets in Medford, including that section of Central, where there is no room to create a designated bicycle lane. As a result, the sharrows have been painted to alert cyclists that they have the right-of-way in that lane. The sharrows also alert motorists that cyclists can use the lane, and drivers need to give them the right-of-way. Motorists can also use the lane as long as they are mindful that they’re sharing it with cyclists. “It’s safer and better if cyclists use the same part of the street,” Crebbin said. But, he said, the city would prefer to put in a designated bike lane wherever possible. The sharrows are used in many other cities in the U.S. and around the world. Crebbin said sharrows have also been painted on Main Street as well, and cyclists and motorists will see them soon in other parts of town in the near future.
