Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend January 27, 2006 Lakeview overtakes St. Mary’s in key SCL test Basketball Roundup St. Mary’s was in a comfortable position with one quarter left in its pivotal Southern Cascade League boys basketball game against Lakeview Thursday. Then something odd happened. Lakeview outscored the Crusaders 17-7 in the fourth period and won, 58-55. "Those are the kind of games we just win at home," said St. Mary’s coach Rick Jackson. "I’ve got to hand it to them. What they did was crank up their defense, and we didn’t handle it very well." The loss prevented St. Mary’s from keeping pace with SCL front-runner Lost River. Lost River is 6-1 in league, followed by St. Mary’s, Cascade Christian and Lakeview all at 5-2. Advertisement The Crusaders (12-4 overall) led 48-41 after three periods, but they failed to take care of the ball down the stretch. "We had a number of turnovers," said Jackson, "and they got some easy transition baskets." One came with about a minute left and the game tied. "We threw it away and they went down and got a two-point lead," said Jackson. Trailing 56-54, Nick Terry made one of two free throws for St. Mary’s, but A.J. Clemens made two at the other end for a 58-55 Lakeview edge. The Crusaders had difficulty getting a shot off in the final 20 seconds until Austin Grant launched a 3-pointer that missed. "We didn’t execute down the stretch, and they played harder than us," said Jackson. Grant scored 19 points and Richie Kaimie 10 for the Crusaders. Clemens tallied 21 for Lakeview, including 13 in the second half. LAKEVIEW (58) — Heath 2, Utley 2, Kiely 12, Clemens 21, Hopper 13, Durkin 6, Hall 2. Totals: 24 6-10 58. ST.
