Fire destroys cabinet shop By Melissa Martin SHADY COVE � A fire that shot flames high into the cold morning air torched a cabinet shop near the Rogue River and threatened three homes in a nearby mobile home park Tuesday. James Humphries, who owns the building at 50 Brophy Way and lives in a portion of it, was home when the fire started but was not injured, said Fire District 3 Chief Robert Miller. Flames filled half the building when crews arrived, but a partition inside served as a fire wall that helped contain the blaze, Miller said. Catherine Legault was watching the flames from the bedroom window of her home in Leisure Days Mobile Home Park. Her home was one of three protected by a Fire District 3 team. "Our house got hot to the touch," Legault said. Leisure Days resident Marjorie Neithercutt called 911 and ran next door to tell neighbor Earl Spung, whose home is located about 30 feet away from the cabinet shop. "There was black smoke and flames shooting up in the air," Spung said. The cabinet shop was operated by David Larson of Shady Cove. Fire District 4 estimated $40,000 worth of damage to the building and $35,000 to the contents. Neither the owner of the building nor the cabinet maker had insurance, according to the fire chief. Larson was still at the fire scene late Tuesday and could not be reached for comment. When the call came at 11 a.m. Tuesday, 13 firefighters from Shady Cove and White City districts responded with two fire engines and two water tenders. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
