PIONEER HEADSTONES Vandals again hit Grants Pass cemetery Comment By Eder Campuzano Grants Pass Daily Courier MailTribune.com By Eder Campuzano Grants Pass Daily Courier Posted Nov. 22, 2015 at 12:01 AM By Eder Campuzano Grants Pass Daily Courier Posted Nov. 22, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News For the second time this year, vandals hit Croxton Memorial Park, defacing several gravestones and a monument overnight Tuesday. Many of the pioneer headstones in the park's central circular display were marred by blue permanent marker. Vandals drew frowning faces with Xs for eyes on headstones and on one stand-alone memorial nearby. A few of the headstones were fractured, and a bench was partially broken. The tiny 2-acre park is located in northeast Grants Pass near Lincoln Elementary School. Many of the headstones in the park are more than 150 years old. Police Lt. Todd Moran said officers who specialize in graffiti abatement are working the case, noting the Department of Public Safety made three arrests the first time the park was hit earlier this year. "We'll be working through informants and other means to see if we can develop suspects," he said. The damage is thought to be removable, he added. In April, three teenagers were arrested in connection with a tagging spree at Croxton as well as two other city parks and the Bridge Street Market. Juvenile Justice Department Director Jim Goodwin said that one of the boys was sent to drug and alcohol treatment, while the other two were ordered to pay restitution. "They went through the court process, went through the restitution process and went through the whole course," he said. One of the teens, Douglas A.J. Dahl, was later accused of participating in two late-night robberies in downtown Grants Pass using a stolen pellet gun. By then Dahl had turned 18. He remains in custody at the county jail and faces prosecution as an adult on charges that include first-degree robbery. Daily Courier City Editor Chris Bristol contributed to this report.
