Anna May foundation has new director A former financial industry recruiter and nonprofit volunteer is the new executive director of the Anna May Family Foundation of Medford. Pamela Monroe Murphy, 50, will manage the foundation that last year granted more than $120,000 to dozens of local nonprofit agencies. She succeeds Sabra Hoffman, who led the foundation after the death of its founder in 2000. Hoffman, former director of the Carpenter Foundation in Medford, is retiring. "This brings together a lot of my talents and interests and it makes me more aware of the need in this community as well as what's happening around the world," said Murphy, a Medford native who returned to the area after a 27-year career in New York and San Francisco. In addition to running Monroe Associates, a recruiting firm, Murphy was a longtime volunteer for several nonprofits, including the Junior League of San Francisco. Murphy will handle administration and operations of the Anna May Family Foundation, which is run by a seven-member board of directors. Together, they will consider funding requests from area nonprofit agencies, no small task as government resources shrink, she said. "This economy has been hard for foundations, too, because the stock markets have come down, but the needs of the community have increased," Murphy said. "Foundations have to be extra diligent in their selection of the projects that they do support." Founded in 1999, the Anna May Family Foundation targets projects that help victims of abuse; help at-risk children find education, recreation and cultural enrichment opportunities; offer emergency food, shelter and medication assistance; and provide employment and training for economically disadvantaged people. Those are lofty goals, said Murphy. "I'm learning just a tremendous amount about what is occurring in our community," she said. "It's the depth of the need from children to the elderly. It's just an amazing amount of need out there." The Anna May Family Foundation awards grants twice a year, with deadlines of Jan. 15 and July 15. The board of directors includes president Stewart Jamieson, vice president Tom Bolton, treasurer Ron Holzkamp, Helen Collins, Bob Diller, Bill Husum and Carin Niebuhr.
