North sweeps away Crater North Medford wasn�t about to fall into the same trap South Medford landed in on Tuesday against Crater. Coming off an upset of the Panthers, the Comets had the Black Tornado trained in their sights Thursday in SOC volleyball action. The Medford sweep, however, was turned away in dominating fashion as North rolled to a 15-0, 15-9 victory over Crater. Candace Fleener left little doubt the Black Tornado was more than ready to defend its home court in the first game, taking a 2-0 lead and then serving the game out with 13 straight points, including four aces. "She is one of our stronger servers in terms of speed and accuracy," said North coach Ron Beick. "She got on a roll and Crater had trouble with their serve-receive passing." Beick altered his lineup for Game 2 and the Tornado had some trouble adjusting as the Comets forced several lulls in the scoring. "I thought Crater stepped up their block in the second game and we broke down on our serve-passing," said Beick. North (9-1, 6-0 SOC) managed a 7-2 lead before Crater rallied to make it 7-4. The Tornado then surged to a 12-4 advantage, but the Comets once again were able to answer with four more points. Kendra Mitchell then closed out the match for North, which spread the offensive attack around. Chaley Higgins was one of seven Tornado players to earn a kill, with Higgins posting four with a .667 hitting percentage. Jill Carrigan and Fleener each added three kills as Kaci Maldonado controlled the tempo of the match at setter. "Kaci Maldonado did nice job of distributing the ball and keeping their block off the ball," said Beick. Crater dropped to 3-3 in league play. SOUTH MEDFORD 15-15, GRANTS PASS 7-3 � Carrie Doren registered 11 kills and Kellie Thomas and Karla Zenz added eight each as South Medford coasted past Grants Pass in the SOC match. Amber Hunt got the Panthers off to a quick start in Game 2 with six points from the service line, including three aces. The victory was South Medford�s third in six SOC matches and improved its overall mark to 6-5. ASHLAND 15-15, KLAMATH UNION 8-9 � At Klamath Falls, senior middle Kaylene Munson had 15 kills and six digs for Klamath Union but Ashland used a balanced attack to beat the Pelicans. Megan Leppert added six kills and Maggie Fisher had 17 assists and six digs as KU dropped to 2-4 in league. ROSEBURG 15-15, EAGLE POINT 9-8 � At Roseburg, Eagle Point led 6-2 in the first game but Roseburg fought back behind the hitting of Megan Morley and Katie Kahn to win going away. Morley, a senior outside hitter, finished with 13 kills while Kahn, a junior outside hitter, had eight. Junior middle Shannon Burmeister added four kills and setter Mary Pat Junkin contributed 25 assists for the Indians, who improved to 6-0 in the SOC and 14-2 overall.
