The fire was reported at 5:50 a.m. off Highway 227 about eight miles north of the town of Trail. Oregon Department of Forestry spokesman Brian Ballou could not confirm whether the flames burned on private or public lands, but he was sure they resulted from human activity. "Definitely human-caused. Exactly what the source of ignition is we don't know yet," he said. He added the fire began near a large dump site of cigarette butts, bottles, plastic bags and food containers scattered in the woods. "The usual detritus you find alongside the road in the woods these days," Ballou said. "It kind of gives us something to pick through." Fire experts will analyze the scene in the coming days, looking for tire tracks, footprints and other clues that could help them discover the cause. ODF and Jackson County Fire District 4 crews responded to the scene with four engines and a water tender. They arrived to see flames burning on both sides of an old road below Highway 227. The area was heavily wooded with moderate slopes. "It doesn't look like the fire (got) enough intensity to burn any trees," Ballou said. It took almost four hours to get the fire contained because of its erratic growth. "It's kind of a sprawling fire. A lot of nooks and crannies to it," Ballou said. Crews from both agencies responded to a fire that also was thought to be human-caused Sunday morning in Shady Cove. That blaze started in grass and brush off Train Lane at the north end of town. Firefighters stayed on scene until the early afternoon lining and containing the flames, which consumed about an acre. Reach reporter Ryan Pfeil at 541-776-4468 or [email protected] .
