Spring practice winds up for the Beavers this morning with a short player-run practice. The depth chart was put out on Wednesday. Andersen said Garretson took control of the position through his play, particularly as the spring went on. "I think all three quarterbacks have progressed, Marcus (McMaryion) has gotten better, we just believe right now that Darell's in a position to take the first snaps in a game and be our starting quarterback," Andersen said. "It's important that the kids understand where they sit. For our team right now we have that opportunity to do it, so we're going to take advantage of the situation in naming obviously Darell as the starter and Marcus as in a spot to continually compete and Mason (Moran) will do the same." Andersen spent much of the spring working the players through a game-day type of schedule for each practice. He decided to switch it up for the final week. "We were able to shift gears and get into more season-like practices," Andersen said. "The practices in the first part of spring were very long and tenuous, which was good, but this was more like the season." While the depth chart is set going into the fall, the Beavers have quite a bit of work ahead in the next several months. Andersen said depth at both inside and outside linebacker is unsettled, as is safety. "Who is going to be there (at safety) and who is the depth at that," Andersen said. "And so unsettled depth at defense, not really unsettled starters I would say, but unsettled depth." Andersen said the running back position is still in flux. With the exception of Ryan Nall, who is No. 1 on the depth chart, none of the players have been able to show enough on the field. "I feel that Ryan is No. 1 and he has done nothing but distance himself from the others, some due to injury, some due to inexperience, injury and inexperience, so that is a high level of concern for me walking (out of) the spring," Andersen said. "We have bodies, but bodies have to practice to be able to show that they can do it, so that's a position I would say I wish did more in the spring and that was disappointing." After a tough outing in the Hillsboro scrimmage, the receivers came back strong in practice. Those who were able to play in the spring game wound up performing well, particularly Jordan Villamin and H-back Noah Togiai. "I would say as hard as I was on the wide receivers after the Hillsboro scrimmage, I'm not saying I flip-flopped them, they flip-flopped themselves and became playmakers," Andersen said. "We started to catch some contested balls and deal with the easy catches better. We got some yards after the catch. And so I think those kids I think really stepped up late."
