Pair face charges in Crater Lake fee heist Moeller Saturday Dec 3, 2016 at 4:36 PM Dec 3, 2016 at 4:36 PM Nick Morgan Mail Tribune @mtcrimebeat A Klamath County pair face multiple federal charges alleging they vandalized a locked collection box at Crater Lake National Park and stole fee envelopes. John William Moeller and Lindsey Lorraine Johnson, both of Klamath Falls, were arraigned Thursday on theft, depredation and conspiracy charges in U.S. District Court in Medford. Moeller was allegedly seen on park surveillance video making multiple attempts to vandalize and take the contents of a metal "Iron Ranger" after-hours collection tube from the Annie Springs entrance on the south end of the park. The incident occurred early in the morning of Nov. 17, according to court documents filed in the case. The footage allegedly shows Moeller making several failed attempts to take the collection box, first spending about 25 minutes attempting to drill holes into the top of the fee container, and later using a crowbar and a hammer, according to an affidavit filed by a park ranger. When those attempts failed, Moeller made attempts at the container with his car, first attempting to remove the collection tube with a chain connected to his 2001 Ford Taurus sedan. Footage taken at 4 a.m. showed Moeller using his Ford to ram the container. The deposit containers can contain between $1,500 and $2,500, the affidavit says. At about 2:30 the next morning, the park ranger caught Moeller making new attempts to get into the same box while Johnson held a flashlight from the passenger seat. Inside the Taurus, the park ranger found Crater Lake fee envelopes between the driver's seat and center console, an envelope between the passenger seat and passenger door, and multiple envelopes at Johnson's feet. The amount is alleged to be less than $1,000. Also in the car, park rangers found multiple tools, including a crowbar, hammer, corded reciprocating saw, metal chains, a flat pry bar, a metal chisel, two spring-actuated grabbing tool and a power inverter, along with a McDonald's cup containing an alcoholic beverage, marijuana and smoking paraphernalia. The park ranger said Moeller admitted that he tried to steal the collection tube, saying he was broke and needed the money. Prior to being handcuffed, Johnson denied any involvement. "Johnson made several statements spontaneously that she had no idea this is what they were coming to the park to do," the affidavit says. "Johnson stated she was very upset with Moeller and wanted no part of this." Moeller and Johnson entered not guilty pleas Thursday to charges of conspiracy to commit theft of government property, theft of government property and depredation of government property.  Moeller and Johnson were booked in the Jackson County Jail on Nov. 18, and Moeller remained lodged in the jail Saturday without bail, Jackson County Jail records showed. — Reach reporter Nick Morgan at 541-776-4471 or [email protected].
