PREP SOCCER Pena drives Crusaders to shutout MailTribune.com Writer Posted Sep. 10, 2014 @ 2:00 am Posted Sep. 10, 2014 @ 2:00 am » Social News Junior forward Austin Pena had two goals and an assist to lead the Class 3A/2A/1A St. Mary’s boys soccer team to a 3-0 victory over 4A Phoenix at U.S. Cellular Community Park on Tuesday. Pena — who came off the bench — scored on an assist from Hunter Rothfus in the 16th minute. He gave the Crusaders a 2-0 lead after taking advantage of a fumbled ball by the Phoenix goalkeeper eight minutes before halftime. Rothfus scored on a pass from Pena in the 56th minute. Goalkeeper Ryan Trask earned the complete-match shutout for St. Mary’s (1-1), last year’s state runner-up. Avery Kerwin was effective in the midfield for the Crusaders, who turned in 14 shots on goal to the Pirates’ five. St. Mary’s opened the season with a 1-0 loss to Henley, last season’s 4A state runner-up. Phoenix lost in the 4A final in 2011. EAGLE POINT 9, MAZAMA 0: At Eagle Point, senior Ronaldo Rincones had a hat trick with two assists to help lift Eagle Point’s record to 3-0. Rincones scored in the fourth, 43rd and 70th minutes. Kevin VanDyke recorded two goals, Sebastian Tovar chipped in a goal and an assist and Alex Angel, Christian Batinza and Lucas Gomez each scored for the Eagles. Tyler Wanamaker had two assists. HENLEY 2, ASHLAND 1: At Ashland, Ashland freshman Daric Lucero broke up a scoreless tie in the 63rd minute before Henley rallied with two late goals in nonleague action. On Lucero’s goal, the ball twice bounced off the post before rolling in. The Hornets tied things up with nine minutes left and then capitalized on an indirect kick with only a minute to go in regulation. Goalkeeper Tejas Leie Heyden made several tough saves and defenders David and Gabe Lehrburger performed well for the Grizzlies (0-2). Girls NORTH MEDFORD 0, SOUTH SALEM 0: North Medford’s defense was outstanding but visiting South Salem didn’t give the Black Tornado many scoring chances in the nonleague game. North Medford’s closest opportunity came in the 64th minute, when Halley Folsom’s shot forced the Saxons’ goalie to lay out and smother the ball. Freshman striker Riley Karrick pressured the Saxons’ backline for the Black Tornado (1-0-2), and midfielder Casey O’Duane helped keep South Salem’s offense in check. Black Tornado goalkeeper Haley Hass recorded four saves. CRATER 3, PHOENIX 1: At Central Point, Crater evened its season record at 1-1 with the nonconference win. The Comets got goals from Katie Niedermeyer on a free kick, Emily McCollum on a solo drive and Sydney Beck on a penalty kick. All the scores came after Phoenix’s Sara Saurman put the Pirates up 1-0 on a about a 50-yard shot in the 57th minute. MAZAMA 5, EAGLE POINT 0: At Klamath Falls, Eagle Point’s Krystal VanDyke turned in a strong effort and goalkeeper Lupe Partida made several saves in nonleague action. The Eagles (0-2-1) trailed 2-0 at halftime.
