Mail Tribune 100, Feb. 11, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 11, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Feb. 11, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Feb. 11, 1916 MODOC ORCHARD TO PUMP WATER Manager W. A. Summer of the Modoc orchards, while in San Francisco recently, purchased a pumping plant soon to be installed on the high levels of that big orchard property for the purpose of irrigating thirty-nine acres devoted largely to pears. In addition to the pears there are only a family orchard and garden, together with a great variety of grapes, including many eastern kinds. These grape varieties will ultimately be reduced in number to those which make the best showing in quality and yield. The absolute need for irrigation of this tract was shown by the results of irrigation of the extensive orchard on the lower levels. The water will be pumped from the main canal by use of a 30-horsepower distillate pump, capable of hitting 275 gallons a minute. The tank on the highest point of the pear orchard holds 23000 gallons. From this source of supply a system of laterals will carry the water to all other points of the orchard and garden. LARGER ACREAGE OF WHEAT PROMISED The promise of an increased acreage of wheat in this valley this season carries with it the additional promise of a much improved quality of grain. Better feed has been selected and better seedbeds prepared. For several years prior to last season wheat was raised in this valley specifically for chicken and hog feed, there being no market for it for milling purposes locally. The Medford roller mill was modernized, enlarged and otherwise equipped to supply the market for all the wheat raised. On account of this establishment of a local market the farmers concluded to produce a greater harvest of better grain. The Eagle Point mill has been modernized this year by the new owners and will enlarge the local demand for wheat and other grains. The Medford mill is equipped to produce cornmeal and rye flour also and is already putting out a splendid quality of all kinds of breakfast foods. The roller products of the valley this year promise, therefore, a large output of excellent quality of goods in their line.
