The Pirates opened the season in the first round of the Gold Beach Tournament with a 75-48 win over Gold Beach. Phoenix has played in the championship game of the eight-team event the past two years, winning last season over Del Norte, Calif., and losing the year before to the same team. The Pirates advanced to a 12:30 p.m. game today against Bandon. The winner plays for the title at 6:30 p.m., and the loser plays in the third-place game at 3:30 p.m. Forwards Craig Faure scored 22 points and Codey Barrett tallied 17 as the Class 4A Pirates used a strong inside presence to dominate the Class 3A Panthers. Advertisement Miller, an assistant for Phoenix last season, took the helm when Kevin Dixon resigned after last season. "The kids are learning a whole new system of offense and defense from all new coaches," said Miller. "We're in transition right now as far as them knowing us and us knowing them. We played a lot of guys tonight to see what the makeup was and see who was meshing with who." He gave the unveiling a "passing grade," said Miller, "but none of us are satisfied." He was particularly pleased with the balance the Pirates showed. In addition to the play underneath, Phoenix's perimeter defense caused headaches for Gold Beach early on. After a slow start that featured some quick shots and few makes against the Panthers' zone defense, Phoenix settled in. "What really carried us was our defense," said Miller. "We started pressuring them and got a lot of steals. We forced them into doing things they weren't used to doing." Faure had 10 rebounds and Barrett added nine. Center Mike Shepherd was in foul trouble much of the game and managed only seven points, but he did haul in a dozen rebounds. Nick Klein had 13 points and 6-foot-7 wing Abe Lodwick added 11 to lead Mountain View. All 13 players in uniform reached the scoring column for the host Cougars. Mountain View's fullcourt zone press caused havoc for the Eagles (1-1). Mike Hagert drilled three 3-point baskets in the second half and led Eagle Point with 13 points. Shane Hamilton made two 3-pointers and Eric Carter and Joey Knighton had one each as the Loggers scored 16 points in the final period to reduce what had been a 19-point deficit to start the quarter. Carter and Knighton each had 13 points. Carter also had six rebounds, Knighton five assists and Hamilton four steals. Butte Falls (1-1) plays either Gilchrist or Canyonville Christian today for third place.
