Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Advertisement Email Story to a Friend May 4, 2006 Go wild at flower show this weekend Wildflower lovers will be able to treat themselves to the Shady Cove Wildflower Show Saturday and Sunday. This is the 25th annual show put on by the Wildflower Association of Shady Cove-Trail — a quarter century of dedication, collecting and interpreting our wildflower bounty to educate and entertain the whole community. I don't know anyone who doesn't like wildflowers. How can you help but admire the glorious gardens that Mother Nature creates? They put every one of us gardeners to shame, because many wildflower groupings rival our best-planned gardens for beauty and appeal. If you enjoy attaching names to things like I do, the Shady Cove show is a good way to fill in the blanks when the guidebooks fail to thoroughly identify all the little pretties you see blooming around Southern Oregon. The show includes an exhibition of more than 200 live wildflower specimens collected by members, all identified by common and botanical names. A continuous wildflower video, as well, is informative and lovely. A Master Gardener and botanist will be on hand to answer questions. Other exhibits include an art fair and sale by the Upper Rogue Artists, a quilt show and sale by the Material Girls, an indoor and outdoor plant sale, raffles and refreshments. A lunch of barbecue, hot dogs and chicken will be available. The Shady Cove Wildflower Show is held at the Shady Cove School Multipurpose Building on Cleveland Street, just off of Highway 62. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Admission is by donation; proceeds go to Jackson County Fire District 4 to purchase a power supply for "Jaws of Life" extraction equipment. The Shady Cove Wildflower Show will no longer be sponsored by the group after this year, and they hope another group will take over. Coming up The Siskiyou Chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Medford Congregational Church, 1801 E. Jackson St. Call 664-5934 for more information. Josef Halda of the Czech Republic will present the topic of "Tiny Witches Brooms," which are useful in propagating conifer trees of small stature, perfect for rock and alpine gardens. Halda will be in Southern Oregon to continue construction of a 2-acre rock garden at Pacifica Botanic Garden, which is under development in Williams. The Jackson County Master Food Preservers are giving a class on preserving lemons from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center auditorium, 569 Hanley Road. The food preservers say, "When life gives you lemons, why not make lemon chutney, lemon curd or lavender lemonade." The class will be taught by certified master food preservers.
