That was almost two years ago, and the last that was ever said about them was Jan. 18, 2006. Why haven't they been charged? -- Jan, via e-mail The wheels of justice may turn slowly, but Edward Jay Silva's day in court is coming around. The Mail Tribune's Jan. 18, 2006, story stated that Silva, 29, Micah Joe Downing, 35, and Thomas Ray Taylor, 34, were charged with robbing the Gold Hill branch of Washington Mutual Bank. Silva and Downing are scheduled for trial June 13 in U.S. District Court. Federal grand jurors indicted the two on numerous counts of robbery, conspiracy and using a firearm during the Sept. 7, 2005, heist. The duo was scheduled for trial in February, but Silva was granted a motion for a new attorney. He and Downing also were charged with the Aug. 18, 2005, robbery of the Trophy Club Bar and Grill on Medford's South Central Avenue. The last Mail Tribune update about the case was in July. Arrested the day of the Gold Hill robbery, Taylor pleaded guilty in August to the crime. His sentencing has been set for Aug. 9 this year. Silva and Downing could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted of the most serious of six counts alleging they used a firearm to commit robbery. Silva faces additional federal charges for the June 20, 2005, holdup at Bank of America in downtown Medford, the city's first "takeover" robbery in 10 years. He was arrested Nov. 10, 2005, in Sacramento, Calif., following a manhunt and the suspected robbery of two California banks.
