George William Elliott Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 8, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Nov. 8, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News November 16, 1920 - November 2, 2015 At 6:09 p.m., Pacific Standard Time, November 2, 2015, George William Elliott “slipped the surly bonds of earth…and touched the face of God.” George was born November 16, 1920 to Robert Edward and Esther Louise Styron Elliott in Norfolk, Va. George grew up in Norfolk and attended Maury High School, Ferrum Jr College, and the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary/VPI. Marrying Marilyn Gaynelle Bonner December 4, 1941, he often joked that three days after Marilyn and he started fighting, the whole world started fighting. George enlisted in the Virginia Army National Guard at age 14 and received his first Honorable Discharge at age 15. He later enrolled in a Special Temporary U. S. Coast Guard Reserve at the start of WWII and was dis-enrolled in order to become a cadet in the U. S. Army Air Forces receiving a Best Cadet Award and serving active duty as a flight instructor. When the war ended, he served in the Reserve until he received his U. S. Air Force Reserve Honorable Discharge in 1953. After WWII, George began his flying career as the owner and President of Norvair. When he lost his naval pupils to the Korean War and a curfew hurt his thriving business, he sold his planes and became a commercial Capital Airlines pilot in 1951. Capital Airlines merged with United Air Lines in 1961 and George moved his family to Greenwich, Connecticut. Because of his professional skill and public contact ability, George was selected by United to fly the Nixon press charter plane for Nixon’s 1968 Presidential campaign. George flew with United until his mandatory pilot retirement in 1980, returning as a flight engineer until 1989. He spent a short but extraordinary retirement with Marilyn who died unexpectedly in 1990. In 1991, George married Virginia Harrison Marsh and they lived a wonderful life together until her death in 2006. George enjoyed his last 6 years in beautiful southern Oregon after spending 40 delightful years on Lake Barcroft in Falls Church, Virginia. George was a wonderful son, husband, father, and mentor. George had a passion for flying and loved his career in aviation. He was an example to which many should aspire and he is missed. George was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife of 49 years, Marilyn Bonner Elliott; his son, Robert B. Elliott; a second wife, Virginia Harrison Elliott; and his siblings, Louise Shriver, Robert E. Elliott Jr, and Ruth Robinett. George is survived by his children, Carolyn Roberts (James), Bill Elliott (Lorraine), and Catherine Dimino (Lou); his grandchildren, Adrienne Franco (Danny) and Noreen Elliott; his great-grandsons, Tyler and Kai Franco and Vail Cordoba; and many wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, and their children. Services will be provided by H. D. Oliver Funeral Home and interment will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 14, 2015 at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk, Va. In lieu of flowers, George would have been pleased if you remember him by contributing to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at Dulles Airport.
