With the College Football Playoff’s first championship game between No. 2 Oregon (13-1) and No. 4 Ohio State (13-1) set for Jan. 12 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, here are 10 early thoughts about the matchup: 1. It’s the ‘Spread Bowl’: One thing that Oregon and Ohio State have in common is they have coaches who have been innovators in the development of the spread offense. Urban Meyer has been developing his offense since his days at Bowling Green, then Utah, Florida and now Ohio State. Mark Helfrich was the understudy to Chip Kelly as offensive coordinator at Oregon before becoming head coach last season. “We know Oregon,” Meyer said. “I’ll probably be able to call Oregon’s plays because we study them and they study us. There’s a mutual respect.” 2. “Spread-to-run”: Their spreads share a common theme — They were innovative because they were both “spread-to-run” offenses. More than any spread programs before them, Oregon and Meyer’s teams’ offenses aimed to spread the defense out to run the ball, ending the perception of the spread as a past-first offense. These two programs, along with Gus Mahlzahn’s Auburn offense, might be seen as the “Holy Trinity” of ‘spread-to-run’ offenses. And they just so happen to make up three of the last four teams to play for a national championship. 3. It’s Helfrich’s offense and team: Raise your hand if you still think of it as Chip Kelly’s offense at Oregon. Sure, much of the Oregon spread developed under Kelly, but after two years and a 24-3 record, it’s quickly becoming Helfrich’s team and his offense. He’s proven to be more than just a caretaker of a legacy Kelly left behind. One thing about Oregon’s offense is it has evolved over the years. Helfrich has taken over that evolution along with offensive coordinator Scott Frost, and Oregon is now better than ever on offense. 4. Opposites in the running game: An interesting contrast between the two offenses is the way the quarterback and running back interact. At the heart of both running games is a series of option plays between the quarterback and the running back, but their interactions are quite opposite on the two teams. Oregon’s Marcus Mariota is a threat to get to the edge, a speedster who can get outside and score. His running backs, Royce Freeman and Thomas Tyner, can punish teams up the middle with downhill styles. Quite the opposite is true of Ohio State. Like Tim Tebow from Meyer’s Florida days, Buckeyes sophomore quarterback Cardale Jones is huge (6-foot-5, 250 pounds) and runs like a fullback. On an option read, Jones will likely look to take it up the middle while lightning-fast running back Ezekiel Elliott is the outside threat. 5.
