On Thursday, the Pirates found their pitching groove as well, defeating Sutherlin, 6-1, in a nonconference game. Phoenix (4-1), averaging 10 runs a game, scored five runs over the fifth and sixth innings to pull ahead. A trio of Pirate pitchers limited Sutherlin to four hits to seal the win. Starter Chad Walker gave up two hits, Brenton Ferguson came in for two innings of effective relief and Josh Lorton tossed the final two innings to close out the game. "I thought our guys were pretty effective," said Phoenix coach Joe Hagler. "And I thought we had some big at-bats, too. To get 11 hits off these guys felt pretty good because this was the best pitching we’ve faced all year." Sutherlin ended Phoenix’s season a year ago with an 11-0 victory in the first round of the state playoffs. Advertisement "It’s not like it’s a playoff game," said Hagler, "but it was a good win, that’s for sure." John Goldberg provided a pair of big blows in the decisive fifth and sixth innings. With the bases loaded and one out, Goldberg fought off several 0-2 pitches before lacing a two-run single to put the Pirates up in the fifth. He added an RBI hit in the sixth that sparked a three-run inning. Hagler was most impressed with the gritty at-bat in the fifth. "That was just a great battle," said the coach. "You could tell that hit took the wind out of their (Sutherlin) sails." Dustin Smith also had a big day, going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Walker had two hits, including his sixth double of the season — eight shy of the school’s single-season record he set last year. The Pirates begin Skyline Conference play on Tuesday at North Valley.
