Suarez struck out seven and gave up a first-inning run but got plenty of offensive support in a 7-1 victory for Medford in the opener. George struck out six in the nightcap to help the Mustangs to a 4-1 triumph. George and Grants Pass starter Ben Murray were locked in a pitcher’s duel until the Mustangs broke through for four runs in the fifth inning of the second game. Murray, who finished with 12 strikeouts, gave up RBI hits to Logan Boyd, Justin Meyer and Derek Grieve. The Nuggets also committed two errors in the inning that proved costly. Grieve and Meyer each had two hits in Game 2 to lead the Mustangs. In the opener, Logan Odom provided an RBI double in the second inning and an RBI single in the fifth as Medford (12-0, 2-0 Area 4) scored in every inning but two to pull away. But Mustangs’ second baseman Ryan Augino made a leaping catch of a ball hit to short right-center field, then turned to double off a Grants Pass baserunner to end the game. Dustin Smith, Boyd, Abe Eubank, Meyer and Odom each went 2-for-4 to lead Medford’s 13-hit attack. The Mustangs host the Siskiyou Spirits in a nonleague doubleheader today at noon.
