The National Weather Service has issued a high wind watch from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Cascades and Siskiyous. The mountains could see sustained wind speeds of up to 50 mph and gusts of 75 mph. "T hat being said, Medford could still see some gusty winds," said meteorologist Brad Schaaf. Medford could see gusts up to 40 mph, and Ashland could see gusts of 50 mph. Sustained wind speeds of 25 to 35 mph are forecast for across the Rogue Valley. "Strong winds such as these can down trees and power lines and could make driving difficult at times, especially for high profile vehicles," the watch notice reads. It's a familiar sight for the mountains ringing the Rogue Valley. On Sunday, Mt. Ashland Ski Area closed for safety reasons after facility management reported seeing lift chairs sway to the point of almost touching the lift towers in 50 mph sustained winds. General manager Hiram Towle called the decision "very easy." Lifts were back open Monday. Weather officials said the mountain received 14 inches of new snow this weekend, and flocks of skiers and snowboarders took notice. "Attention: The parking lot is full!" Mt. Ashland wrote on Twitter late Monday morning. Plenty of rain also fell over southwest Oregon over the weekend, with 48-hour totals ranging from four-fifths of an inch to nearly two and a half inches. A site about five miles southwest of Medford saw more than two inches, while areas outside Ruch, Ashland, Jacksonville, Prospect, Howard Prairie and Eagle Point all recorded more than one and a half inches. The Medford airport saw just under an inch and a half. Some rain also fell in the mountains, though weather officials said the deluge wasn't enough to significantly melt snowpack because of the rain's chilly temperature, weather officials said. "Most likely it did not penetrate very far and most of it just ran off," Schaaf said. Additional rain is expected off and on through the week across Jackson County, a pattern that's forecast to continue and could prove beneficial come fire season. "We're still on track to believe that our drought here in the Rogue Valley should be eliminated within the next few months," Schaaf said. "That's what is being forecast.
