Classrooms, offices, staff and students moved last week to allow for the wholesale removal of asbestos from the building. Classes will remain displaced through the summer and school officials hope to have the bulk of the project complete before students return for fall term. Some faculty have moved their offices to their homes. According to SOU Physical Plant Director Bruce Moats, bids for the project were received this week and work will begin soon. "We received two valid bids and they are under review," Moats said. "The bottom line is we hope to be able to put them to work around (Wednesday)." Advertisement In the early 1990s, a state-funded inspection revealed the presence of asbestos and asbestos-containing materials in 32 of the university’s 35 buildings. Of noted concern in the report was the ed- psych building and the library. "The reason the library and the ed-psych building were of special concern was because of where the asbestos is located," Moats said. In the ed-psych building, asbestos-containing materials were found in the ceiling and in the rooftop mechanical penthouse — both of which serve as air ducts for the building’s ventilation system. In March, university officials shut off two large fans that distribute air in the building. The fans will remain idle until the asbestos is gone, university officials said. In addition to working at home, some administrative staff members for the psychology department were moved to Taylor Hall and several members of the education department will be moved to a temporary portable structure delivered to the university Tuesday. An additional portable structure will be put in place in three weeks for more staff and faculty offices. Most education classes are being held in the Ashland High School Science building with one class at Phoenix High School. Other classes were moved elsewhere on SOU’s campus. About 25 classes in each department will be displaced per session. Moats said the goal is to have the project complete by Sept. 15. However, psychology classes will be rescheduled for fall term and staff offices will remain in the on-campus portable structures as work continues on the third floor of the building.
