The situation began unfolding at 1:25 p.m. Sunday when dispatchers received a report of a $30,000 stolen ring and notified law enforcement to be on the lookout for a suspect driving a black Cadillac Escalade away from the Costco at 3639 Crater Lake Highway in Medford. Police also were given a partial license plate number, said Medford Police Department Sergeant Jason Antley. Medford and Ashland police, as well as Oregon State Police and the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, were all watching for the suspect vehicle, he said. A dark Chevy Suburban, which looks similar to an Escalade, was stopped by Medford police along Coker Butte Road off Crater Lake Highway at 1:42 p.m., Antley said. He said two suspects were detained for questioning about their involvement in the ring theft case. The investigation is ongoing. Ansley said they did not attempt to elude police or resist arrest. He declined to release their names, ages or addresses. Initial reports to dispatchers indicated the suspect vehicle had California license plates. Theft of an item or items valued at $10,000 or more constitutes first-degree aggravated theft, a felony, under Oregon law.
