Hare, who previously had said he would be getting outpatient care, also announced he will pay for transportation out of his own pocket and will not be using county employees or resources for transportation, according to a statement from his attorney, Jacob G. Daniels of Creswell. The release from the attorney stated that Hare will undergo any recommended treatment and counseling ordered by the Eugene Municipal Court. Daniels called the arrest a "wake-up call" for Hare. He also said his client will not resign his seat on the Board of Commissioners, as some members of the community have demanded. "He is optimistic he can do something meaningful with this experience by raising awareness of the hazards of drinking and driving and alcoholism," Daniels wrote. The decision to pay for his own transportation is a nod to a policy adopted by fellow commissioners Keith Heck and Cherryl Walker barring Hare from driving himself during any official business. It would also prohibit Hare from borrowing county vehicles and gave his fellow commissioners final approval for any reimbursement requests. Because Hare declined to take a breathalyzer test at the time of his arrest, under Oregon law he was required to immediately surrender his license. Daniels said Hare will petition the Department of Motor Vehicles for a hardship permit that will allow him to drive to and from work. Hare, 37, was arrested Dec. 10 in Eugene, where he was attending a two-day board meeting of the Association of O&C Counties. The group is an assortment of Oregon county commissioners who discuss and lobby on timber policies. Despite his absence from the meeting, Hare was elected its vice president. He was first elected to the Josephine County Board of Commissioners in 2010 and re-elected in 2014. His term expires in 2018. This is Hare's third public misstep involving alcohol in as many years. In 2013 Hare reported his Jeep stolen after a night of drinking, even though it was found locked and parked only a few blocks from his home. A Medford police officer concluded Hare filed a false report, but prosecutors with the state Attorney General's Office in Salem, citing a lack of evidence, declined to file charges. A year ago, while at a local tavern, a prank backfired on Hare when he grabbed the wrong cellphone and accidentally sent crude text messages to two young women.
