A team from Southern Oregon had never qualified for the state championship game until this year, when the Junior Pee Wee and Pee Wee teams — both named the Medford Indians — won Sunday at Autzen Stadium in Eugene. "We brought the trophy home from the valley to Southern Oregon," Junior Pee Wee coach Scott Engle said. "It was awesome for the kids to be able to play at Autzen. It was the chance of a lifetime." The Junior Pee Wee Indians, made up of 9- and 10-year-olds, defeated the Willamette Valley Dolphins 31-0 to cap an undefeated season in which they did not yield a point. "Our defense pretty much dominated and kept them under control," Engle said. Matt Retzlaff and Jesse Hornbrook were named team co-MVPs for the season. Both players played crucial roles on defense, said Engle. Advertisement In the Pee Wee title game, Medford also defeated the Willamette Valley Dolphins, 18-6. "We pounded the ball a lot, and that helped us." coach Darren Godfrey said. Jeremy Scottow had a hand in all three of Medford’s touchdowns. Scottow caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Derek Godfrey , son of the coach. He ran for a 2-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and in the third quarter, he threw a 40-yard halfback pass to Tyler Marshall . The Indians, made up of 10- and 11-year-olds, scored 18 unanswered points after Willamette Valley scored a touchdown. Defensively, Medford stopped the run well with Mark Hodges Jr., Jimmy Ditty and Jeffrey Larson . "It was a great experience for our kids," coach Godfrey said. "It was a well-organized program, and our kids played well." Throughout the season, the Indians (10-1) averaged more than 24 points per game while allowing fewer than six.
