Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend July 24, 2005 Cave Junction woman dies in collision A Cave Junction woman died Saturday afternoon in a head-on collision on Highway 199 just north of the Oregon- California border. Joan Miller Norman, 72, was traveling northbound in a 1990 Mercury Sable when for unknown reasons her car crossed the center line into oncoming traffic. A Ford Explorer traveling southbound changed lanes in an attempt to avoid hitting Norman’s car. Norman drove back into the northbound lane and hit the Explorer head-on, Oregon State Police said. Norman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, Benjamin Tolle, 28, of Cave Junction, was not injured. The Explorer’s driver, Michael Derek Halverson, 20, of Cave Junction, was not injured. His passenger, Thomas Halverson, 11, of Eugene, was flown in a Mercy Flights helicopter to Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford, where he was treated and released, OSP said. The Explorer’s second passenger, Susan Halverson, 48, of Eugene, was taken by ambulance to Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass, where she was treated and released. A third passenger was not injured. Advertisement The wreckage blocked both lanes for about two hours while Oregon State Police investigated the crash. The occupants of both cars were wearing seat belts, OSP said. The Oregon Department of Transportation, Illinois Valley Fire and Rescue crews, U.S. Forest Service crews and Josephine County Sheriff’s Office assisted OSP on the scene.
