The fire burned in a 900-square-foot structure that housed carpentry tools and other equipment, according to the property owner, John Henderson. No one lived in the building but a renter who lives in a double-wide mobile home behind the property was unhurt and her home untouched by the flames. "My renter said she heard some fireworks ... and then she heard some crackling and saw the fire," Henderson said. Engines from Jacksonville and Applegate fire districts and Oregon Department of Forestry knocked the blaze down within 15 minutes after arriving, according to Applegate Fire Capt. TaiLese Goodnough. She said the building was likely a total loss and the cause was not immediately known. She said fireworks were a possibility, based on neighbors' accounts, but fire officials didn't know whether the blaze started inside or out. She said there was no spread to wildlands, which is a concern for firefighters in a wooded residential area such as Sterling Creek. Henderson and his wife, Cheryl, said his nephew, who does carpentry work, stored tools, gold-mining equipment and rocks he's collected over the years in the building, where Cheryl's parents lived for many years before their passing. "There's a lot of memories," John said. Neighbors watching firefighters douse the flames said they, too, heard fireworks before the fire broke out, though they hadn't seen anyone near the building all day. "My wife saw it first," said Dave Pendzick, who lives next door. "I was watching TV, and she said, 'I can't believe they're shooting fireworks.' She got up and the whole thing was on fire."
