Here are blog excerpts from "Sports Insiders": Advertisement Bring back seeding Posted Feb. 23 Can you imagine the NCAA tournament committee randomly sprinkling teams into the playoff bracket on Selection Sunday, with no regard to seeding? If that happened, you inevitably would have a first-round matchup of say, No. 1-ranked Wisconsin against No. 5 North Carolina. Wouldn't that be preposterous? ... Seeding is a logical and largely fair distribution system, and it needs to be incorporated into the state playoffs in Oregon high school basketball. ... The demise ofOregon's Sports Action Posted Feb. 17 Intimidation and hypocrisy. Those are the two words that come to mind with the demise of Oregon's Sports Action lottery game. Since 1989, the Oregon lottery has sponsored Sports Action that allowed betting on NFL games. The Oregon legislature capitulated to intimidation tactics by the NCAA, college sports' ruling body, to get rid of Sports Action so the state can host NCAA basketball tournament games. For eliminating Sports Action with the end of the 2006-07 NFL season, the Rose Garden in Portland was awarded second-round men's tournament games in March 2009. Why college officials were so concerned if people in Oregon were betting on professional football baffles me. The whole March Madness popularity has been fueled by gambling on these games. ... Is losing evera good thing? Posted Feb. 14 Right about now, it's very possible South Medford boys basketball coach Dennis Murphy must be getting his fill of well-meaning sports fans telling him how the Panthers' 65-61 loss to Sheldon on Tuesday may, in fact, be a good thing. It's only natural for such a response. Heck, those of us in the office were even debating that very possibility as the Panthers were having their comeback attempt fall short in Eugene. When you have a top-tier team — such as at South Medford — can a loss ever be considered a good thing?
