Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 4, 2005 Late charge lifts White over Newsom By KRIS HENRY Mail Tribune Brooks Newsom had a feeling it was only a matter of time before either he or third-round foe Jimmy White got hot and their match was over. Newsom proved to be correct, but found little solace in that fact Saturday afternoon as he lost out on a chance to defend his men’s championship in the 76th annual Southern Oregon Golf Tournament at Rogue Valley Country Club. Faced with a one-hole deficit through 12, White turned up the heat with four straight birdies en route to a 3-and-2 victory and a berth in this morning’s quarterfinals. "It was kind of a slugfest of no one stepping up and playing well early," said Newsom, 36, "and then Jimmy finally did late." Saturday’s marquee match featured four lead changes and not as many birdies as either player had expected entering the day. Advertisement It was only after blowing his tee shot out of bounds on the par-5 12th hole, eventually conceding the hole to Newsom, that White began to put it all together. From tee to green over hole Nos. 13-16, the former University of Oregon standout was flawless. "I just tried to regroup," White said of his thought process after going 1-down at 12. "The only thing I could do was put pressure on him and the only way to do that was to just keep hitting good golf shots. I was able to put together a string right in a row there that really put me in good position to win." White’s opponent this morning will be Tim Croft, who was a 6-and-5 winner over Brian Hay on Saturday. "I’ve got to start putting better," White, 23, said of what needs to happen in order to keep advancing. "That definitely has been holding me back. And I need to be a little more consistent off the tee. I need to keep putting it in the fairway to put pressure on the guys." In other men’s results Saturday, Ryan Schaefer edged Todd Neilson, 2 and 1; Bret Breeze topped Todd Couch, 3 and 2; Justin Wise was a 4-and-3 winner over Doug Olson; Adam Browne bested Brad Bills, 4 and 3; Brodie Sullivan beat Glen Clark, 4 and 2; and Mark DeBoer edged Marty Morlan, 2 and 1. At age 36, DeBoer is the "veteran" of a lower bracket that features young guns Wise, Browne and Sullivan. In the junior-senior men’s division, defending champion Jay Audia advanced to face Terry Faulkner in today’s semifinals, while Marshall Holman earned a second straight 5-and-3 victory and David Boals was a 1-up winner over Doug Engle. Today’s senior men’s semifinals also shape up to be a dandy as Terry Newsom won on the 21st hole to earn a shot at five-time champion Bob Harrell, who was a 3-and-2 winner over Bob Maentz. In the other semifinal, medalist Keith Valk will square off with Terry Anderson, who earned a 3-and-2 decision over Dan Dixon. In the women’s division, defending champion Nettie Morrison advanced to face Trina Rasmussen in today’s semifinals, while Johnna Nealy edged older sister Amanda Nealy, 4 and 3, and Abby Fowler scored a 6-and-5 victory over Mo McFaddin. Defending champion Carmen Akins advanced to the semifinals in the senior women’s division, along with Pamela Faurote, medalist Pam Hubbard and Nancy Breitenstein. White, who was the men’s runner-up in 2000, began his assault on a quarterfinal berth with a dart that landed about five feet from the hole on the 190-yard, par-3 13th hole. In contrast, Newsom’s tee shot missed the green to the left and then his bump-and-run 5 wood crawled six feet past the hole. Newsom calmly drained his putt to place the onus on White, who answered the challenge to square the match heading to No. 14. After a booming drive by White put him in perfect position with 75 yards to go, Newsom lost a second straight tee shot to the left and wound up in the rough about 105 yards away. Newsom’s approach shot wound up about 35 feet from the hole, while a dialed-in White chipped to within two feet of the flag. Newsom narrowly missed a chance to keep the match even, but his long putt had a little too much pace and wound up rimming out of the right edge of the hole. White hit another perfect drive down the right fairway on 15, while Newsom’s struggles continued as his drive found the right rough and left an imposing second shot that involved low-hanging tree limbs, a sand trap to clear and very little green to work with. While his soft punch shot was about as good as any effort that could have been made, Newsom still left himself a 25-foot, downhill putt for birdie. White countered with another delicate chip that nestled about three feet away from the hole. Newsom then sent a hard-charging putt past the hole and, still up, missed a comebacker that led to him conceding the hole to White. With a two-hole lead and only three to play, White let loose on the 480-yard, par-5 16th with a 345-yard drive to the center of the downhill portion of the fairway. Newsom was unable to answer, dropping his driver almost as soon as he made contact on the tee as he watched the shot fall short and in line with a patch of trees on the left side of the fairway. "I actually never felt that comfortable swinging all day," Newsom said later. The match then took a do-or-die feel for Newsom, who had no doubts White was in line for an easy birdie and possibly an eagle. Newsom muscled up a 3-iron from about 230 yards that hit short of the green and plugged into the embankment of the nearby pond. White’s ensuing wedge shot put him about 20 feet below the hole. With no other choice, Newsom then slid off his shoes and socks, stepped into the pond amid a couple gasps and giggles and put a charge into the muddy slope in hopes of a miracle. All he got, however, was a two-foot advancement of the ball and a muddy shower. "That’s not one I practice," Newsom said of the effort following the match, which ended only after his next chip rolled inches to the side of the cup and White’s lag putt came to rest in similar style. "I didn’t have any idea how that was going to come out of there. To see all the mud fly up in the air and then try to find my ball was pretty funny." The same kind of helpless laughter could be found a few holes back with Olson, who was eyeing a fourth men’s crown but couldn’t quite muster the magic of earlier rounds against Wise. Neither player was particularly sharp early, with Wise posting an even-par round on the front but still was able to take a 4-up lead as Olson shot a 40. Even when Wise left the door open by going OB on nine or posting a double bogey on 10, Olson couldn’t capitalize thanks to a shaky putter. "My putting was not good," said Olson. "When it gets down a little further in here and you start three-putting, that kills you." "Justin had some really good birdies and I was just off," added the 58-year-old. "I’d been having a hard time breaking 80 coming in here. I was kind of getting it going but it was a pretty weak base, and today it just kind of caught up to me, unfortunately."
