The black manx and his companions, Tom and Anne Upton, live in a 1,250-square-foot apartment that offers stunning views of the valley below. Socrates apparently is the master of his little kingdom, which features granite counter tops in the kitchen, tile in the bathroom and hardwood floors. He also knows what the word "no" means when he tries to run out into the hallway. "His name is Socrates because he is smarter than we are," said 80-year-old Anne Upton, though she added he hasn't figured out how to use the elevator yet. The Manor Terrace, a five-story, 120,000-square-foot building, is joined to the main Manor building that is 395,000 square feet. Residents began moving into the apartments in late September, but some of the finishing touches still are being added to the building. In addition to 41 apartments and 28 private care suites, the Manor Terrace features a recreation room, a theater room, a pharmacy, a therapy gym and a hydrotherapy pool to help people recover from surgeries such as hip replacement. "This is the biggest expansion since the Skyline Plaza," said Sarah Prewitt, spokeswoman for the Manor. The 170,000-square-foot Plaza opened in 1998. The Manor Terrace is one of the main features of a $65 million expansion at the Rogue Valley Manor, tripling the size of the health care center and adding new living quarters to the vast retirement complex on 668 acres in southeast Medford. The Manor has been selling $150 million in revenue bonds that will both refinance existing loans and pay for the expansion project. One of the more popular features of the Manor Terrace is the new restaurant, the Roxy Ann Grille. "We like to come here," said Manor resident Jean Dunham. "We couldn't be happier," said her stepsister, 75-year-old Maggie Honegger. They live in one of the 300 cottages that surround the three hilltop buildings and have lived at the Manor since 2006, moving up from Solvang, Calif. Dunham and Honegger can eat one meal a day at one of the three cafes in the Manor buildings as one of the services of living at the Manor. Residents in the Manor Terrace can eat all three meals at the restaurant. Dunham decided to have a hamburger, surprised to discover it had two patties instead of one. Despite her cholesterol problems, she said it didn't bother her to eat the burger. "I take Lipitor," she said, referring to the cholesterol drug. Honegger ate a salad, noting she doesn't have cholesterol problems. More than a year before it was completed, the Manor Terrace was completely booked, Prewitt said. The Manor Terrace is designed for residents who have health issues or want to live in a place that is more central to services, Prewitt said. The hydrotherapy pool is the only one of its kind in Southern Oregon, she said. It features an underwater treadmill and underwater cameras so therapists can view a resident's movements. Prewitt said someone who has had surgery often can begin underwater therapy five or six days after getting out of the hospital. Solar panels have been mounted on the roof, providing up to 100 percent of the hot water needed during some parts of the day. The building also has energy-efficient equipment. Because some of the residents have difficulty getting out and about, the Manor decided to bring nature close to them. Outdoor photos by local artist Sean Bagshaw are featured on many of the walls. Upton said she and her husband moved from a 1,750-square-foot cottage, so it has been a bit of an adjustment to fit all their furniture into the smaller space. When the day comes that they will no longer be able to drive, the new apartment will come in handy. "We're kind of in the middle of everything," she said. The couple have lived at the Manor for more than 10 years. Looking around her new apartment, Upton said, "We're getting so we feel like this is home."
