PREP FOOTBALL Challengers' Olson heads list of all-state players Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Dec. 20, 2014 at 5:47 PM Posted Dec. 20, 2014 at 5:47 PM » Social News Cascade Christian senior linebacker Dante Olson has been chosen Class 3A defensive player of the year, and he was joined by a handful of other local football players named to the first teams for their respective classifications. Other first-teamers in balloting by state coaches were South Medford senior punter Craig Contreras, Grants Pass senior kicker Moges Dinkins and junior defensive lineman Anthony Del Toro in Class 6A; Ashland senior defensive back Max Montgomery in 5A; and, in 3A, Cascade Christian senior offensive lineman Collin Badura and Illinois Valley senior running back James Thompson. Grants Pass’ John Musser was 6A coach of the year, while Hermiston’s Mark Hodges, a former North Medford assistant, claimed the 5A honor. Olson, who also was a second-team tight end, helped the Challengers to their fifth straight Southern Cascade League crown and into the state quarterfinals. He led the team in tackles with 135 and added five sacks. Thompson ran for 1,920 yards and scored 21 touchdowns. Contreras averaged 35.6 yards per punt. Three other Cascade Christian players joined Olson on the second unit. They were junior wide receiver Jake Booker, junior defensive lineman Brandon Winter and senior kicker Myka Thomas. Ashland had three second-teamers in junior wide receiver Shashi Penn, senior linebacker Parker Layton and junior punter Walker Shibley. Grants Pass senior tight end Kirkland Meadows was a second-team choice. Those receiving honorable mention in Class 6A included North Medford senior running back Nick Janakes and senior wide receiver Tristen Holmes, and Grant Pass senior quarterback Javan Appling, senior running back Zachary Hannan, senior wide receiver Keegan Weiss, senior defensive back JC McKinley and offensive lineman Del Toro. In 5A, Crater senior offensive lineman Roman Lacey and senior defensive lineman Ryan Davis earned honorable mention, as did Phoenix senior wide receiver Ty Mahaffey and junior defensive back Frank Masalosalo in 4A and Cascade Christian defensive lineman Badura.
