Staving off serious illness while learning new job skills is sapping a single Medford father's resources. The 52-year-old used to work for weeks at a time in Alaska until a frantic call from his oldest daughter relayed shocking news: His wife had left and wasn't coming back. Returning to a disheveled house and terrified children, the man quit work to stay home with them. But he was soon hospitalized with intestinal inflammation known as Crohn's disease. He is enrolled in college working toward a degree in less physically demanding fields. His health, however, remains too fragile to permit working. The family lives on student loans and food stamps. The family could use household items such as pots, pans and queen-sized sheet sets. Both daughters, 16 and 10, wish for queen-sized down comforters while their 14-year-old brother wants a mattress and box spring set. Advertisement The man would appreciate gift certificates to buy clothes, shoes and a jacket. His oldest daughter would like pants (size 0-1), shirts in junior miss size medium, a warm but "cute" jacket, Hanes ankle socks, perfume and lotion. The son would like a skateboard, men's small shirts, a name-brand "hoodie," and a lined Carhart or jean jacket, both in men's medium sizes. The younger daughter would like a Hello Kitty digital alarm clock, a gift certificate for a manicure, junior miss medium-sized shirts, a hoodie or zip-up sweatshirt and DC Skate shoes (any color except pink) in kid's size 41„2.
