The theft was reported at 11:16 a.m. at the motel, 518 N. Riverside Ave., by the front desk clerk. Police say the man was not a guest at the establishment, but walked into the lobby, grabbed a cup of coffee and made small talk with the clerk, who left the desk at some point for a short period of time and returned to find her iPhone 4 had disappeared. The man is described as a white male in his early 30s, average height, balding and wearing a knit hat and a winter coat bearing a unique-looking logo. Investigators say the description, especially the logo-bearing coat, is strikingly similar to the description of a suspect who lit a fire outside the La Clinica building at Jackson Elementary Wednesday night. The attempts to burn the building down were unsuccessful. Surveillance video from the Medford School District shows a man entering the west Medford elementary school's campus at 10:26 p.m. About 13 minutes later, he is seen lighting a piece of clothing on fire in front of the stand-alone La Clinica building, adjacent to the cafeteria. The fire burned out after about a minute, so the suspect repositioned the clothing and lit it again. The man also attempted unsuccessfully to break a cafeteria window with a rock. A staff member noticed and extinguished the smoldering burn at about 7:30 a.m. Thursday. By that time, the fire had burned a small section of subflooring.
