Zupan Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 1, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Mar. 1, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Southern Oregon lost one of its "Greatest Generation" heroes with the passing of Leo A. Zupan, 96. He died Sunday, February 15, 2015 at the home of his son, surrounded by his loving family. Leo was born in Price, Utah July 19, 1918 to Michael and Mary Zupan. He was the youngest of their three children. As a young man he moved to Ashland to work as a salesman in Fortmiller's Department Store. Soon after, World War II broke out and Leo joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served as a co-pilot on a B-17 bomber which was shot down April 29, 1944 over Czechoslovakia. All but one member of the crew survived and were held as prisoners until the end of the war. Leo returned to Ashland and on August 16, 1945 married the love of his life, Veda Velma Williams, at the home of John and Louise Daugherty. They were blessed with three children, Cloma, John, and Tricia. The majority of Leo's working career was spent as a real estate broker. He became a partner with Louise Myers and Bob Van Vleet in 1965. He and his son John bought Van Vleet and Associates in 1974 and affiliated with Windermere in 1994. He was a member of B.P.O.E. #944, the Ashland Racquet Club, Quiet Birds, was an avid golfer, and loved dancing. One of Leo's favorite pastimes was hosting a weekly poker game in his basement. He loved life, his family and friends, his dog Sunny, and a dry martini with one of Veda's homemade dilly beans. Leo is survived by his son, John (Marilyn) Zupan of Medford, Oregon; daughter, Tricia Bauer of Boise, Idaho; grandchildren, Chad Lewis, Chelsea Sampson, Devin Zupan, Jennifer Carrier and Dani Akulschin; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Veda; and his daughter, Cloma Lewis. We all loved him dearly. He served his country, loved his family, and was loyal to his friends. A memorial service will be held on March 8 at 2:00 p.m. at the Historic Ashland Armory, 208 Oak Street, Ashland, OR 97520.
