Michael "Hap" Happeny Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Feb. 28, 2016 at 2:00 AM Posted Feb. 28, 2016 at 2:00 AM » Social News August 12, 1934 - February 13, 2016 Michael Happeny ran into the arms of his Lord February 13, 2016 while surrounded with love from eight family members who were by his side. He was born August 12, 1934 to his mother, Mabel in Kenosha, Wis., the seventh of nine children . After moving to Muskegon, Mich. as a boy, Mickey loved growing up in the Wolf Lake area, and enjoyed nothing more than playing all sports and having endless boyhood adventures. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps on his seventeenth birthday (at least that’s how he tells it!) and served two tours in the Korean War, including time in Okinawa. He was ultimately proud that he got to work on “The Big Switch” prisoner exchange. He met the love of his life, Shirley Rust, in Muskegon, and they were married July 26, 1956 in Ravenna, Mich. The family moved to Orange County in California in 1960, where they raised three sons and lived for 50 years. Mike retired from I.T.T. Cannon and went to work as a marshal at the Costa Mesa Country Club where he was known to all as “Hap,” and often expressed his wish to "eliminate the gray." Mike and Shirley relocated to Medford, Ore. from 2006-2010; returned to California from 2011-2013; finally returning to Medford in 2014. Hap was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. (Veterans of Foreign Wars) and loved all teams from Detroit. A big University of Michigan and Michigan State fan, he also loved playing golf with his brothers, sons, and nephews. Hap especially enjoyed 20 years of playing (and winning!) the Fantasy Baseball League organized at the golf course, and several years of being involved in Fantasy Football and ‘Pro Pick'em.’ He enjoyed watching professional golf and was also a big NASCAR and Kyle Busch fan. Mike loved classic country music, and yodeled to Hank Williams now and then. Johnny Cash, Roger Miller, Merle Haggard, George Strait, and Alan Jackson were also his favorites to listen to and sing along. He loved family gatherings, singing happily with his brothers, and when his nephew, Jimmy, would play guitar, he let Uncle Mike sing his favorite songs. These were good times. Mike is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Shirley; his three sons Mark (PJ), Kurt, and Greg (Pam); his sister, Judy (George); 9 grandchildren, Danielle (James), Shayna, Chellsea, Dane (Tracy), Paige, Corey, Luke, Caitlin, and Carissa; 7 great-grandchildren, Isabella, Conor, Brody, Ryder, CJ, Hadley, and Easton; and many loving nieces and nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his mother Mabel; his brothers Frank, Jim, Bill, and Jerry; and his sister, Sally. A celebration of life event will be planned for later this summer.
