With that in mind, I'm anticipating a pent-up demand for juicy cheeseburgers in the coming weeks, and I've found a couple of neighborhood spots in Medford that won't break the bank. I started my burger adventure at Frosty Boy, 916 King St., a place I've driven past many times. I'd seen painted on the window that they offer a hamburger and fries for $3.75 and was curious to see what you get for the price. Joan Merriman has been running the hamburger and soft-serve ice cream spot since it opened in 1967, and the burgers are cooked with pride. On my first visit, I ordered the cheeseburger basket ($4.25), with a small Diet Coke ($1) served in a Styrofoam cup. I ordered it with the works, which included lettuce, tomatoes, onion, mustard and pickle relish on freshly grilled buns. The fries were freshly made and the food was well prepared, but those used to fast food value meals may consider the portions on the small side. I actually found the serving size of a few generations ago to be refreshing, because I felt like I indulged yet didn't feel weighed down by my midday meal choice. That said, I made another visit to try the double cheeseburger basket ($5.25). You can find larger burgers in the area, but the double delivered a satisfying serving of fresh and freshly grilled beef patties and American cheese. This time I also went for a small chocolate malt ($3.50), also served in Styrofoam, which was very smooth. I had great experiences at Frosty Boy, but there are caveats.  Fries are served with or without ketchup — there's no ranch or fry sauce. Seating is limited to four small tables for a total of 16 seats, so the place fills up quickly at peak hours. They're  open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Also, be sure to bring cash, because they don't take plastic. Back in September of 2013, I raved about generous burgers and kettle-cooked fries at Quality Market on East Jackson Street. Shortly after that article, a reader tipped me off to another market with a surprisingly good grill, The Store Deli and Grocery, 2037 Roberts Road, near Crater Lake Highway. They're open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. weekdays, and 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. I went for the Double Cheeseburger Value Meal ($5.50), which bought me a heaping serving of juicy ground beef and American cheese topped with lettuce, onions, tomato and fry sauce on a freshly grilled bun. It came with a generous side of fries and a 22-ounce soda, plus a container of my choice of fry sauce or ranch dressing. Extra sauce containers were available for a quarter, and ketchup packets were handy to throw in the bag. The burger was very juicy and exceptionally made, especially considering the price. All but the very heartiest appetites will probably find themselves satisfied with the regular Cheeseburger Combo ($4.50) — I could hardly finish my double and spent my afternoon with trouble concentrating because I did. Most seem to take their orders to go, but The Store has a fairly large standing table area set up for people who'd rather eat and run. The Store accepts debit cards for charges over $3. There was about a 10- to 15-minute wait from order to pickup during my visit, but calling in orders at 541-734-5469 can mitigate that wait.
