(Mail Tribune / Jim Craven) A nice place in the mountains New year-round resort will throw open its doors on Hyatt Lake By Damian Mann Mail Tribune A year-round mountain resort with an outdoor skating rink and up to 76 cabins is taking shape at Hyatt Lake. The Hyatt Resort was purchased three weeks ago by Campers Cove Resort LLC, made up of Bob McNeely and his wife, Jeanne Plante, and Don and Kathy McNeely. They also bought nearby Campers Cove last year. The family owns the Whaleshead Beach Resort in Brookings. With millions of dollars that will be invested in improvements at both properties, including new parking and docks, McNeely said, "I believe if we provide a nice place in the mountains, people will come." Most of the work should be done by Thanksgiving including the new skating rink, he said. Advertisement He wants to make a place that will attract snowmobile riders, cross-country skiers and others who just want to enjoy the snow, drawing them in with a cozy cabins and a restaurant. "We'll have a great big fireplace to warm up," he said. The old restaurant at Campers Cove, which was dark and dingy with no views of the lake, has been renovated and is open for businesss. "It was a total dump at one time," said Tony Mineo, who lives in the area and was staining the outside of the newly remodeled restaurant Friday. "This place was so ugly and so filthy." Big new windows offer diners a view of the lake. Behind the restaurant up to 26 cabins will be built and the parking lot will be paved. New docks will be installed along the lake. The Campers Cove property is about two acres with another two acres leased from the federal government. Hyatt Resort, a short distance away on Hyatt-Prairie Road, will soon have a new pizza parlor and ice cream bar as well as a mini-mart and new gas station. Bob McNeely said he hopes to build up to 50 cabins on the Hyatt Resort property. Currently there are five old cabins on the 30-acre property with an additional 12 acres leased from the federal government. He also is looking into adding additional spaces for recreational vehicles. McNeely said the resort should attract everyone from cyclists, fishers and hunters to motorcyclists, boaters, campers and recreational vehicle owners. The county plows the roads in winter, and McNeely said the parking lots will be cleared of snow, which was more than 4 feet deep last winter. He said he wants to make the place as inviting as possible for Rogue Valley residents who want to go to the mountains, but don't have any place to stay or eat during the winter months. The cabins are being purchased by private individuals and are then managed by the resort. He said he has sold 14 cabins at Campers Cove, ranging in price from $115,000 to $165,000. At Hyatt Resort, cabins will be as low as $65,000 and up to $200,000. The cabins are actually a type of recreational vehicle that is used in parks and resorts, sold by Nor'Wester Industries Inc.
