MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jan. 8, 2010 @ 2:00 am Posted Jan. 8, 2010 @ 2:00 am » Social News I read in the Mail Tribune about the possibility of having a planetarium in Ashland. What has become of the planetarium that I used to visit at North Medford High School? I remember that it was scheduled an evening a month where the public could come for free. I also went with school groups there during the daytime. Thanks for doing research on this for me. — Leona B., Central Point. North Medford's planetarium is still bringing the starry skies to students and the public alike. If you dig deep in the Tempo magazine inside the Mail Tribune on Fridays, you'll find a calendar listing for 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of every month. The event is in conjunction with a monthly meeting of the Southern Oregon Sky Watchers club. About 4,500 to 5,000 people see the high school's artificial night sky every year, said planetarium director Robert Black. Black teaches science and usually has three astronomy classes. The 90 or so students in those three classes use the planetarium regularly for their studies. Students from all over the valley visit the planetarium. Admission is free for schools in Medford. Out-of-district schools pay $80 to bring a class to a planetarium presentation. The planetarium at Ashland's ScienceWorks isn't a sure thing yet. Officials there expect to hear back in the spring about whether it will be awarded a $650,000 grant from NASA to build the state-of-the-art planetarium. Similar planetariums are now operating in Eugene and Redding. Send questions to "Since You Asked," Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
