Ashland bests 47 schools in debate tourney Ashland High School students won a speech and debate tournament Saturday against 47 schools in Oregon and Washington. Ashland scored 155 points in the tournament at the University of Oregon, with Barlow High School coming in second with 98 points. Ashland senior Andrew Westmoreland received a forensics scholarship to the university for his performance in the event. After winning all three major invitational titles this season at Willamette University, Pacific University and the University of Oregon, Ashland will begin its national qualifying at Southern Oregon University on March 14 and 15. Individual event placements went to Micah Canal, first for junior extemporaneous speaking; Peter Axer, second for junior extemporaneous speaking; Connor Sexton, a tie for fourth for junior extemporaneous speaking; Amy Hopkins, second for senior oratory and second for open expository; Jacob Burkhead and Dan Golden, second for open dual interpretation; Matt Bolstad a tie for fourth for open expository; Vanessa Boult and Simone Wren, semis in open dual interpretation; Orion Hall, Steve McNamara and Jacob Burkhead, semis in open radio commentary; Kristin Pew, Chris Bingham, semis in junior extemporaneous. Debate speaker awards: Benn Dodds placed eighth, Chris Bingham placed second and Connor Sexton placed first in junior division policy debate; Joseph Bornstein was 10th, Orion Hall third and Andrew Westmoreland first in senior division policy debate; Kristin Pew placed sixth, Tehlor Beebe-Martin came in second and Peter Axer was first in junior Lincoln Douglas debate; Connor Buhl place fifth for senior Lincoln Douglas debate. Debate places in the tournament were: Benn Dodds and Matt Bolstad tied Chris Bingham and Connor Sexton for first place in junior policy debate; Rachel Sohl with a perfect 9-0 tied Kristin Pew for first in junior Lincoln Douglas debate; Tehlor Beebe-Martin had a tie for fourth in junior Lincoln Douglas debate; Connor Buhl a tie for fifth in senior Lincoln Douglas debate; and Peter Axer a tie for fifth in junior Lincoln Douglas debate. Congress places: Jess Daly was third for outstanding speaker; Kari Proud was nominated for outstanding speaker; Evan Dahlquist was a finalist and Andrew Olsen was finalist.
