Bingo night will support Butte Falls youth center BUTTE FALLS -- The Butte Falls Youth Center will hold a bingo night from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Community Hall. The cost is 25 cents per card and funds will be used to keep the youth center open. "It cost between $1,300 and $1,400 a month for electricity, rent, salaries and art supplies to keep the youth center open," said Jonna Hayes, director. After school and on weekends, between 18 and 23 students ranging in age from third grade to high school hang out at the center, working on art projects or playing pingpong or pool, Hayes said. Their current project is a quilt that will be displayed at a Mother's Day luncheon. "We gave each kid a big square to draw a picture of their favorite thing about Butte Falls," Hayes said. "We stitched them together and hope to have it done by spring break." Other activities at the youth center have included golf and fishing lessons, jewelry making and model kit classes. The youth center was started in 1998 by Butte Falls High graduate Amber Hersom as her senior project. She secured a large room in the town's old boarding house, now owned by Mike and Liz Stritenberg, youth center board members. Hayes has started bingo nights, scheduled for the third Thursday of the month, to raise money to keep the center open. Last weekend board members held a golf tournament at the Eagle Point Golf Course that raised nearly $1,000. The youth center, also known as Logger Landing, is located on the corner of Main and Oak streets. The hours are 3:30 to 5:30 Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 6 to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Admission is 50 cents a day or $5 a year. Children must be accompanied by a teenager. For information, call 865-7726.
