Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Advertisement Email Story to a Friend February 25, 2006 Hikers rescued from darkened Grizzly Peak A Jackson County sheriff’s search and rescue team found two young women stranded atop Grizzly Peak east of Ashland just past midnight Friday morning after their two friends called police for help finding them. Kelly Marie Stevens, 22, and Emily Daryl Dezendorf, 20, both Southern Oregon University students, were cold but safe when found, officials said. A late afternoon start for a hike to the peak’s summit left the women stranded as darkness fell Thursday, deputy Thomas Turk reported Friday. The four SOU students went to hike on Grizzly Peak about 3 p.m. Thursday, Turk’s report said. They parked their car on Shale City Road and walked to the Grizzly Peak trailhead. There, two of the young women decided they were too tired to continue, so they went back to the car. Stevens and Dezendorf continued up the trail. After waiting in the car for hours for their friends to return, the two others called the sheriff’s office for help at 7:25 p.m. Advertisement Sheriff Mike Winters said that, as darkness fell, the two hikers got disoriented in a meadow at the top of the hill and couldn’t find the trail back down. Without a light, they hunkered down to wait, but they didn’t have winter clothing on or any food with them. Four deputies and 22 search and rescue volunteers combed the area with trucks, snowmobiles and a Sno-Cat. They found footprints in the snow, tracked the hikers up the hill and helped them back down to their waiting friends. "It was a very dark night," Winters said.
