With the Mail Tribune's latest redesign, I'm flipping pages more than what seems necessary. In this morning's paper (Monday, May 25) I have to turn from Page 1 to Page 4 to finish articles then back to Page 2 to find the end of articles started on Page 3. I was taught to read left to right in consecutive page numbers. Why can't you do what feels logical — articles on Page 1 finish on Page 2, those that start on Page 3 finish on Page 4? — Paige J., Medford Paige, there is a method to the madness, says our editor, Bob Hunter. Don't tell him we said this, but since it was his idea, it may be an issue letting him decide just how mad it really is. Nevertheless, here's his explanation: We run our local news stories at the front of the paper, except on days when we have a separate Local section, usually Fridays and Sundays. We do that in part because we can better control the amount of space available. The pages farther back in the A section include obituaries and a variety of ads. Page A4 is the primary spot for obits, and since we don't know from day to day how many we'll get, it could lead to some tight squeezes for local content if we used that page for jumps (that's what we call the story continuations). Others have suggested starting Local on A2 and jumping to A3, instead of the other way around. The problem with that is that we can't run full-color photos on A2, and our photographers would probably pack up their Nikons and go home if we made them run their photos in black and white. (Plus, we all would miss the pretty colors.) Our pages are generally set up to run local first, followed by Northwest and then Nation/World. The closer to home, the closer the story is to the front of the paper. Our madman ... er, editor ... says he made the decision to jump from A3 to A2 one day when he had the paper open and came to the amazing discovery that not only are pages 2 and 3 next to each other, but you can look at the jump without turning a page, since it's right next door. Reading from right to left — some would call that out-of-the-box thinking; others perhaps would suggest it's more like out-of-his mind thinking.
