The Black Tornado took advantage of the absence of Ashland’s Stephanie Johns to capture an 11-stroke victory over Grants Pass in the final regular season SOC counter meet. Johns, the top player for the league-leading Grizzlies, didn’t compete because of a sore arm. "It’s nothing serious," said Ashland coach Stephanie Santos. "She’ll be back for districts. It certainly hurt us not having her today." North Medford now trails front-runner Ashland by 47 strokes in the league standings with only the district meet next Monday and Tuesday at the Grants Pass Golf Course remaining. Grants Pass’ Justine Hix won medalist honors with a 4-over-par 76, while Ashland’s Elaina Graham was second with a 79. Advertisement Kacie Kinney led North (363) with an 82. "We played pretty well," said North Medford coach Tim Sam, "but what really worked for us was having Ashland’s No. 1 player at home. They had to take a 128 where normally they’d get about a 76 from Johns. "With her back, I don’t see anyone contending with Ashland. It should be a pretty good race for second and third, though, with us Grants Pass and probably Roseburg."
