Prep girls basketball Pirates let one slip away in fourth quarter to Bruins GOLD BEACH -- The iron proved unkind for the Phoenix girls basketball team Friday as the Pirates fell prey to poor shooting and a tough Brookings squad, 51-46, in the first round of the Gold Beach-Rotary Tournament. Phoenix (1-1) managed a 31-27 halftime lead before an 18 percent shooting effort in the second half let Brookings climb back into the game and eventually steal the non-conference victory. "We actually came out and played pretty well in the first half," Phoenix coach Kyle Walker said. "Offensively we were doing a lot of things well. "We just missed a lot of easy shots in the second half. We must have missed five or six layups. The wheels kind of came off a little bit." One Phoenix wheel clicking on all cylinders was Jessica Prisbrey, who paced the Pirates with 21 points and drained two of the team's three 3-pointers. Walker gave Brookings credit for maintaining its poise throughout the game, but said the loss rested mostly in the Pirates' inability to find the basket. Phoenix had the first seven scoring opportunities to open the third quarter, and missed the mark each time. "We didn't capitalize on our offensive opportunities, but defensively I was pleased," the coach said. "The kids worked real hard for the whole game." Phoenix faces Hidden Valley in the second round of the tournament today at 2 p.m. The winner will play again tonight at 7:30.
