Crater, meanwhile, was coming off maybe its best performance of the season, a 67-44 shellacking of South Medford on Friday. Both trends continued, as the Comets outscored the Pelicans 25-10 in the first period on the way to a 63-46 victory. "We’d been outscored 79-40 in the first quarter of (SOC) games up to this point," said John Riggs, KU’s second-year head coach. "And it was even worse tonight. "I don’t know if we were surprised by these kids or nervous or what. ... It was ugly." Crater (8-6, 4-1 SOC), which trails only North Medford (5-0 SOC) in the conference standings, sprang an early halfcourt trap and rotated defenses throughout the night to force a season-high 42 turnovers. Advertisement Senior wings Jessica Stoner and Dani Montgomery swiped five steals apiece to help the Comets to 28 total steals. "We did different types of things to kind of move it around and keep them guessing about where stuff was gonna come from," Comets second-year head coach Scott Dippel said of his team’s defensive strategy. Crater held the league’s leading scorer, Pelicans junior guard Jenni Ritter, in relative check. She scored six of her team-high 15 points late in the game. "They were into her pretty good," said Riggs, whose club fell to 8-7 overall and 0-5 in the SOC. The Comets’ attack was paced by senior wing Katie Robertson, who shot 8 of 15 in scoring 17 points to join six rebounds and four assists. Montgomery added 14 points, and senior point guard Whitney Black overcame the flu for 11 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals. Junior post Nicki Tyska collected seven boards and six blocks inside for Crater. KU countered with sophomore post Corie Monti, who gobbled 14 rebounds to go with nine points.
