LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, May 10 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 10, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 10, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News Editorial misses point The Chicago Tribune editorial criticizing Chipotle’s decision to eliminate GMO ingredients in its menu misses the whole point of those opposed to the GMO enterprise. Remember that chemical pesticide and herbicide manufacturers initiated the introduction of genetically modified organisms into plants for the specific purpose of increasing their sales of poisons. Because those targeted pests and natural weeds quickly adapted to the poisons, even more and more deadly chemicals are being applied to GMO fields. The poisons do not stay there. They are increasingly identified with human sickness and pain. Thirty thousand doctors in Argentina have recently demanded the end to using Roundup in Argentina. Glyphosate is Roundup. Note: The doctors have found glyphosate in human urine, blood and breast milk. Well-managed farms without GMO products are just as productive, without any sickening downsides. Gerald Cavanaugh Ashland Vote for Campbell In order to rebuild the trust in our schools, community and families, we need people on the Medford School Board willing to work together. We are not adversaries, we are caring adults who need to work collaboratively to ensure the best education possible for our children. Michael Campbell is willing to work with School Board members, parents, teachers and administrators to do what is best for our community. He wants students and teachers to have the tools they need to succeed in life. That means smaller class sizes, the arts, PE, and career pathways for high school students. He wants visibility and clear communication from the School Board. We need to repair our community and work together. It shouldn’t be a them-against-us mentality. Vote for Michael Campbell, Medford School Board Position 5, and let the healing begin! For the children’s sake. Barbara Holtz, first grade, Oak Grove Elementary Medford Defend the ban The Jackson County GMO crop ban (Measure 15-119) that passed in last year’s election with 66 percent of the vote is under threat of being overturned by a lawsuit. Two Jackson County farmers who grow GE alfalfa (with the support of big biotech) filed that lawsuit in November claiming our ordinance violates Oregon’s state law. In February, U.S. District Judge Clarke allowed Our Family Farms Coalition, Oshala Farms and family farmers Elise Higley and Chris Hardy to join the case as co-defendants of the ban together with Jackson County. A team of lawyers from the Center for Food Safety and the Earthrise Law Center are working alongside Jackson County to defend the GMO ban. The case to defend the GMO crop ban is a strong case and we have a great legal team to defend our ordinance and OFFC is fundraising to pay for that defense. You can help by donating at the Medford or Ashland food co-ops. Join the online OFFC Kickstarter campaign and get a reward. Or join the fun at our big concert on May 17 at the Historic Ashland Armory. Donna Breedlove Medford Feeling safer Now that we just need the governor’s signature to expand background checks that will keep guns away from people that shouldn’t have them, I feel safer already. How about enforcing the laws that are already on the books? What a joke! Richard Cody Applegate Concert was great Hats off to the Siskiyou Singers and director Mark Reppert for a wonderful concert commemorating 150 years since the Civil War. An outstanding piano solo by Mikko Petrucelli titled "L'Union" incorporating the Star Spangled Banner and Yankee Doodle Dandy brought a well-deserved standing ovation. The choir performed a stirring Battle Hymn of the Republic. Thank you Singers. Great job!
