Someone please help me out: There are armed guards to protect the White House. There are armed guards to protect the U.S. Congress and Senate. There are armed guards to protect all courthouses in America. There are armed guards to protect American airports and railroad stations. There are even armed guards in banks to protect money! But, there are no armed guards in schools to protect our most precious treasures, our children! Am I missing something? Darrell Monk Medford Justice? I am a disabled senior citizen on a fixed income. I'm blessed with food stamps. In the past I failed to report income over the guidelines. I paid everything back in full. After retiring I got a part-time job caregiving. The state miscalculated my income. I lost $97 in food stamps. Did they pay me back? No! Justice? Marie English Medford Consider Crain As a CASA , (Court Appointed Special Advocate for children) I have witnessed time and again Judge Crain’s compassion and willingness to assist families during the process through the Community Family Court system. She is extremely fair and yet firm with the families and their goals for success. I am fortunate to have Judge Crain on the bench and supporting our community and my role as a CASA. Please consider voting for her for re-election in May. Judy Chiosso-Glass Medford Support is earned You don’t deserve support; you earn support through performance. Judge Crain was not elected into office her first term. She was appointed by the then governor of Oregon, John Kitzhaber, and for the next two terms she ran unopposed. Judge Crain has had a clear field for the past 18 years with no one challenging her. Deputy District Attorney David Orr is running against her in the upcoming May 17 primary election. David has 21 years of trial experience. David's primary caseload was child abuse prosecution. David believes that money and justice do not mix and accepts no campaign donations. Most judges in Oregon are appointed and many retire mid-term and are replaced once again by the governor. According to our Constitution it is we the people who choose our elected officials. When voting, please keep that in mind. Ruth Brodman Medford A scary season What I find scary this election season is what I fear when looking in the mirror. We all have a dark side, but don’t we fight to contain it, to modify it, to focus on what is best not what is worst within us? The hate-mongering that began in the '80s with the likes of Limbaugh, followed by Fox and Murdoch, too many political pundits and now one party’s leading candidates for the presidency are showing us how much ugliness is present in the USA. I ask myself why these bullying forces of racism, bigotry and hate are apparently successful at appealing to the worst in us. This is not the world I want my grandchildren to inherit. These exploiters, these fear-mongers, mobsters and alarmists are neither great orators nor do they have visions that aspire us to greatness. They promote heinous policies with villainous language. Looking in the mirror and recalling our history, I feel that it is possible for well-meaning people like me to suddenly become intolerant, hateful and mean. What I need is for us to reject this direction and work together, to take pleasure in striving for generosity, integrity, excellence, sensibility, fairness, and civility. Louise D.
