Donald Gregory Berry, 32, is held in the Jackson County Jail without bail on charges of first-degree rape, first-degree sex abuse, failure to register as a sex offender and a parole violation. Law enforcement credits social media in helping capture him, with an arrest made hours after Medford police posted Berry's picture and information on its Facebook page. "Facebook works fast," Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said. Police said their search for Berry has been ongoing since June, when they say he first absconded from his parole. That search ratcheted up after a girl came forward and told police of Berry's alleged sexual assaults on her more than a decade ago. An indictment filed Nov. 20 alleges the abuse took place on Dec. 23, 2003, and Feb. 29, 2004, when the girl was 5 years old. Medford police said there was not enough evidence to go forward with an indictment 10 years ago. Berry was convicted of attempted rape in 2005  and was sentenced to five years of probation, court records show. Police say that incident happened in September 2004 and involved an adult woman. He was sentenced to prison in October 2007 after failing to register as a sex offender. Police say he was released in 2009, but the next year was convicted of attempted first-degree sodomy and attempted first-degree sex abuse for the abuse of a 10-year-old girl in 2004. He was sentenced to nearly three years in prison in that case. Berry was released from prison a second time in May 2014, then absconded from his parole June 5. "That's when he disappeared," Budreau said. Earlier this year, the youngest girl whose 2004 case did not make it to a grand jury came forward with more detailed statements about what had happened. Police reopened the case as a result. "Law enforcement has been looking for him since June and then more actively when we got our indictment," Budreau said. But Berry had been off the radar for more than six months. So police turned to social media, posting Berry's mugshots, description and prior convictions on Facebook Friday, Dec. 12. The post was shared over 2,000 times. Mere hours later, officers received a tip saying Berry was lying low in a trailer in the 6400 block of McLoughlin Drive in White City. Officers arrived at the trailer at 11:06 p.m. Friday and arrested Berry after a short foot chase. "We've found that if the person is local and they're around here, they're going to be caught," Budreau said. "They just can't hide from that many people that are looking for them."
