Chieftain senior Abe Smith hit two home runs and left-hander Danny Hunter (1-1), who threw just 72 total pitches, held the Mustangs to four hits in six innings. "I thought Danny threw exceptionally well," Rogue River coach John White said. "He threw 56 strikes and 16 balls and struck out nine. He had pretty good command of his pitches and pretty much shut them down." The Chieftains (4-4, 1-3 Skyline) scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning to set the tone early. They turned up the heat with two more runs in the second and another in the third for an 8-0 lead after three innings. "We’re playing well, and we hit the ball hard today," White said. "Smith is a senior who is just now getting a chance to play. He hit two out, but we also had four doubles." Matt Frederick (2-for-4), Jeremiah Frey (2-for-2), Ryan Girodat and Joe Carbone (2-for-2) all had doubles. The Mustangs (5-3, 3-3 Skyline), in turn, started off the season with five straight victories. They dropped a twinbill to Mazama on Saturday for their first league losses and extended the skid to three. Trevor Schmidt went 2-for-3 to lead the Mustangs. Hidden Valley is still without pitcher Tyler Mason, who was taken to the hospital after being hit in the head with a pitch in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. Geoff Phillips drove in five runs, going 2-for-2 with two doubles. D.J. Willingham was 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Knights. Lakeview dropped to 0-6 in the Skyline.
